Dachau Concentration Camp: Upper Bavaria, Germany

“Dachau concentration camp was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in 1933, intended to hold political prisoners.” Opened by Heinrich Himmler per direction from Adolf Hitler, it was the blue print of the terror and atrocities to come.

“It’s purpose was enlarged to include forced labor, and eventually, the imprisonment of Jews, German and Austrian criminals, and eventually foreign nationals from countries that Germany occupied or invaded. The Dachau camp system grew to include nearly 100 sub-camps, which were mostly work camps.”

The camp was a model for future executions & the deaths of over 1.7 million Jews & political prisoners through other camps all across Europe during the WWII Nazi invasions. 41,500 lives were taken here, some to disease, starvation and others via executions, be it by firearm or the infamous gas chamber. On April 29, 1945 the U.S. forces liberated Dachau as was also portrayed in HBO’s Band of Brothers. It is estimated that over 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis during the entire Holocaust.

These were some of the hardest photos I’ve ever taken. Please don’t forget history. Bad history is still very important. In a time where society tries to hide the past, we should always promote it lest we ever make the same mistakes again. I hope these photos can in some way, even a little, serve as a reminder and a lesson to generations of the future.

Maybe the victims of Dachau rest in peace. You are not forgotten. 🙏
